By special request
[info]capnkeelhaulk asked for more info on the Steeleye Span song (Parcel of) Rogues in a Nation. Gotcha covered, sir!

Middle verse:

"What force or guile could not subdue
Through many warlike ages
Is wrought now by a coward few
For hireling traitor's wages
The English steel we could disdain
Secure in valour's station
But English gold has been our bane:
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation! "

The lyrics as performed are hard to understand. The best copy of them I have found is
HERE

If you would like to hear the song (which is excellent) before you run out to buy Steeleye Span CDs, which you should, I have uploaded it on YouSendIt.com
HERE.

"I would, or I had seen the day
That treason thus could sell us
My auld gray head had lain in clay
Wi' Bruce and loyal Wallace!"

I think it should be: "I would, ere I had seen the day..."
But that's nit-picking! I do love Steeleye Span. Remember back in the seventies - or was it the eighties when we first heard their album "Below the Salt" and were blown away by their haunting harmonies and rock 'n' roll folk interpretations? Thanks for posting the song!

Yes, that would make a lot more sense! Though got to give the guy props, he got a lot more of the words than I ever did! (I fixed his spelling of guile for my post, so I was nit-picking too.)

I do remember how amazed I was when I first heard Steeleye Span! I wish they were still together, but I guess that's the way it goes with groups.
