Grandma Duty (Belated Report)
As the late great Gilda Radner used to say when channeling Roseanne Roseannadana, it's always something.

My coping mechanism seems to involve rapid vacillation between the extremes of trying to do too much and flaking out entirely. Hence my long absence with only a few cryptic messages.

Here's the short version. In August, one of my twin grand-girlies, Marisa, banged her head in a playground mishap. They took her in for an x-ray and found no damage from the fall, BUT discovered that she had a fairly serious case of Arnold-Chiari Syndrome, where parts of her brain were growing down into her spinal column, blocking the normal flow of spinal fluid and creating cysts that would eventually cause paralysis.

Once they had a surgery date set, plans were put in motion for me to come up and act as medical translator and general helper-outer. I'm not going to pretend that I was just too busy making preparations to be gone for up to two weeks to post anything. My radio silence was partly because I didn't know how to relate all this without making it sound like it was all about me, and partly because I was just quietly freaking out. Also there have been some really good TV shows on....

But seriously. I came up last Tuesday to be present at the pre-op assessment. After a LONG day of waiting (the surgery just before hers went into overtime), Marisa had her giant brain squished back into place Wednesday. She was in the PICU at Childrens' Hospital (NICE facility, btw) about 18 hours, then got moved to her own room. Her recovery is going along like gangbusters and she may get to come home as soon as tomorrow!

Back to it being all about me -- I tried to set-up my horrible HP laptop (recovered from its FIFTH major crash!) with all my backlogged email and the sites I try to keep up with. But I really haven't been keeping up or catching up all that well yet. So if I missed something really really important you think I should know about, let me know, and I will try to report in more regularly as well.

It sounds like things are getting back to semi-normal for you? Yay for Marisa being okay. Does her twin have to be checked out, too (I know nothing about the syndrome or if it's genetic or what)? Marisa looks like a very cute kid--I like her already just from this picture. :D :D

It's not genetic per se, more like a very slow developing birth defect. It can also vary quite a bit in severity. Some people have it and never know it their whole life.

Marisa IS pretty cute, I think, but I'm prejudiced. :)

Glad Marisa's okay -- that's a fortuitous skull trauma, isn't it? Am hoping that (relatively) good luck keeps buoying her in the future. And it's not going to help her ego getting to talk about her "mah brain was soooo beeeeg" surgery, is it? (And that's a great pic, too.)

And it's fantastic that the fam gets a medical interpreter, too. Glad you were able to be there for them and her.

It WAS really lucky, because there was no damage to her spinal cord yet, and now there won't be. Now we start the healing up stage, which has its own rough times, as I am sure you know. But overall, things are looking good!

Hurrah for successful brain-squishing, although, of course, boo to the necessity.

That was, against all probability, a very lucky fall, and is almost enough to make one think an angel gave her a push. But I'm off my medication, so pay no mind to that sort of babbling.

It was extremely lucky, and wherever the luck came from, we're grateful for iit!

Oh wow. I'm glad she's recovering so well (I love the pic too, esp the t-shirt!), and I wish her the best of luck. Certainly was a fortuitous head injury!

If you have to have this sort of thing happen, the pre-teen age is a good time for it to do so. Since it was caught before there was any serious damage to the spinal cord, she should have a full recovery to her normal healthy state. (She has the school record in her grade for pull-ups -- for BOTH sexes!)

Eep! I don't have your qualifications as a medical interpreter, but that certainly sounds serious. I hope that Marisa is fully cured.

It IS a serious condition, but we were extremely lucky that because of the accidental fall we found it out before there was irreversible damage. She should be 100% fine now.

What a cute girl and fun pose! I'm very glad her situation was caught and could be remedied.

Yikes--so glad the x-ray revealed the problem fairly early on.

Well, if she had to get sorta clobbered for the doctors to make such an important discovery, I suppose it qualifies as a Cloud With A Silver Lining...

...nevertheless, I expect I'm not alone in finding myself ungratefully wishing that your family had been recipients of a blessing that was not In Disguise.

I'm happy that your Marisa is recovering smoothly, anyway.

As for your laptop and its multiple crashes, I hear that. Some of my previous computers were just not compliant with any form of Windows, and continually staged similar protests to your laptop's. It made me want to hurl them from a speeding vehicle along a lonely stretch of highway. Or experiment with Linux, even though I know next to nothing about it.

Here's hoping it ALL improves to the point that you find yourself bored, bored, bored, and turning to fannish pursuits to fill the extra time.

Glad Marisa is recovering well. I'm sure that's a story she'll be telling HER grandkids. :) I'm also wondering, does having a larger brain in some areas mean you'll be cognitively better at some things?

And it's really miraculous and ironic how a fall ended up saving her! It reminds me of this pro-wrestler, Matt whathisname, who suffered a concussion after getting hit by a chair during a match. Then when they scanned his brain, they found out he had this tumor no one knew about. So the violent chair shot ended up saving his life. ^_^
